Which production companies would produce our movie?

since our movie is going to be a PG rated thriller, i have tought about some production companies that could be intersted in our movie.

Walt disney:
Walt disney is a major comapny for producing Pg rated movies( such as the haunted mansion) and all other kind of movies that would interest families, even if is mostly intersted in cartoons, I think that would be a great producer for our movie.
WB:
warner bros, another giant of hollywood, produces any kind of movie from the matrix to the looney toones movies. This company was alsoc involved in some of the most famous thriller series such as buffy and in some amazing movies such as Harry Potter.
In my opinion this company could be intersted in our production.

SPYGLASS:
often Spy glass entertainment is associated with WD or WB, Thanks to the great experience on the field of cinema and then great connections, this company could publish and promote our production.

Pietro Papadimitriou: Target audience for our movie using U.K. tribes.

searching between the U.K. tribes it was quite hard to find a tribe that would see a PG rated thriller movie, I managed to find only one that would refelct a bit our target audience, The Mainstream.

The Mainstream is the biggest part of the market, but with alternative/trendy lifestyles and music now much more accessible, the various Mainstream Tribes also lose much of their membership in later years. Those who remain tend to specialise into more aspirational subsets like Casuals, Boy Racers and Sports Junkies. Siege mentality makes the alpha males among Mainstream tribes suspicious of trendy music or clothes and quick to criticise peers who seem to be standing out. Big brand sportswear and high street fashion predominates with Mainstream tribes and music, even for Ravers, is mostly commercial.

Pietro papadimitriou audience research for film openings, what people like and what people don't.

from my brief research it was clear how there are some key elements that people like in film openings and some other key elements that people hate.

people generally like:
  • good CGI graphics (especially in comedy movies or animated movies)
  • good music ( the music must match with the kind of movie is expected to see)
  • good acting ( if there is a presentation of the protagonists during the opening, they must be able to show their personality and briefly their role)
  • Enigma codes ( for example the trailer of se7ven)

this is what people dislike:
  • really long openings
  • boring openings
  • the title at the end
  • constant credits
here is an example of a great film opening.

Pietro Papadimitriou 2 films opening full analysis

THE HAUNTED MANSION
the clip starts with the logo of Walt Disney, these makes the audience already aware that the movie is not going to be particularly frightening . The clip starts with the iconic sound of Walt Disney. The clip starts with diagetic sound of a storm, the camera does a focus pull towards the castle. There is a slow transition and then the  graphic text starts appearing. the sound now is non diagetic. the title start to appear,  the titles appear with objects moving and a particular colour wash thanks to the CGI.
there are short transitions between CGI and real filming.  Often real filming objects turn in to GCI and other way round. the music follows the events of the intro. In fact it gets more serious when the man opens the letter.
The MES is particular, thanks to the mask dressing, the castle, the pens and the hand writing that are shown the audience understands these things are happening in the past.
Towards the end the diagetic and non diagetic sound join  together.
The main shots in the clip are close ups, long shots and mid shots.
there is also graphic match when there is the change between CGI and real filming.

MISFITS (TV SERIES)
All of the intro is with non diagetic sound.
The music is hard rock, already from the music the audience can understand and “ get in the mood” of the series, which is quite violent, sexual and rude at times.
The intro starts with CGI of “graffiti” moving on walls and titles appearing as graffiti.
The lighting is quite dark and grey, which reminds of a outside area of a city.
The drawings that appear on the screen give a short brief of the story of the protagonitst.
Between The titles appearing with CGI there is the presentation of the protagonists and their name appearing.
The transition are really quick between one scene and another.

Stuart Wallace- Use Of Sound Within The Text

There are many way in which i can use sound within the first 2 minutes of the film. Such as I could have a narrator which talks about the boy’s life, for this I would have someone who sounds like the narration from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, to give it the feel that it is a PG film. I would also like some sort of non-diegetic sound within the background, smooth enough that the audience just knows it’s there without paying much attention, I hope that this would build tension for the first major scene. I have decided that i may use "I used to Know" which is copyright free from the freeplay website.

Stuart Wallace- Institutions that may be involved with the film

I have decided that there are two main film institutions that would be involved with the film, this is due to the film being a PG Thriller as well as these being recognized brands.

The first is Warner Brother's, due to their involvement with children, this could be from their cartoons to their other children films, and I believe that their experience would be useful in advertising and distributing the film. But there have also been involved with television, such as Smallville, Buffy the vampire slayer which in some way are thrillers. They also produced the Harry Potter films which have been known as a British phenomenon, based on its reputation, Warner Brother's would be a great institution to work with.
I have also decided that Spyglass Entertainment would be the perfect distributors, since they have 12 years experience with co-producing films as well as being able to work with Paramount Pictures as well as Disney. This would mean that a large part of the market could be targeted when advertising the film through their connections and links.

Stuart Wallace- Key Elements Checklist

  • That the story starts with enigma codes, making the audience question the film and the ideologies shown
  • The use of length of takes, long takes to grab the attention and shot takes to cause tension
  • Will need an introduction to main character, this could be through a non-diegetic narrative or left for the audience to discover
  • This piece of text should not contain scenes that are acceptable to younger viewers, this could be realistic gore as well as sexual content.
  • The non-diegetic sound matches the mise en scene, and is relevant to the feeling of the introduction
  • Will have to use a dolly shot, this is the generic camera movement within certain scenes in thriller
  • Lighting will have to be used effectively, this could be having a lack of light to cause enigma codes and to create tension
  • May use the theory where a scene is acted but the actually offence is not seen, such as the famous shower scene where the killer stabs the woman, this leaves the action to be imagined by the audience which can be worse than recreating it

pietro papadimitriou: research on genre and things to be included in the film

Film genre research and traits

Me and Stuart decided to create a PG rated thriller opening.
Pg rated movies have some common characteristics, even if each one is different.

Some common characteristics are:
  • Ghosts, both good and bad.
  • Creepy places , such as haunted mansions or graveyards
  • General creepy objects such as spider webs, dark places with flickering candles, graves and particular weather conditions for example deep fog or heavy storms
  • The protagonists are generally funny and smart but also really scared of ghosts or monsters
  • There is always a happy ending where the protagonists are well and survived the bad adventure.

A great example is Scooby-doo the movie:
In this movie all of this characteristics previously explained appear, in fact ghosts or monsters always appear. Creepy places such as “ the creepy theme park” where the movie is located, the protagonists are smart ( Vlma) funny ( shaggy and Scooby-doo) and brave ( Daphne and fred)
At the end of the movie , they find out who the villain is and everything goes back to equilibrium.

Stuart Wallace- Narrative Theory

Propp’s Theory
The hero, usually male, is the agent who restores the narrative equilibrium often by embarking upon a quest, for our piece the hero may be the ghost, who may help the person have a better quality of life, and teaches him how to let loose.

The villain who creates the narrative disruption. This may either be a different “bad” ghost who wants to cause trouble.

The donor gives the hero something, it may be an object, information or advice, which helps in resolution of the narrative. This may be an item to fight the bad ghost, and to finally destroy it.

The helper aids the hero in the task of restoring equilibrium. This may be the person which the good ghost has taken control of, having him give the ghost advice on how to go around normal life without looking awkward.

The princess (the victim) is usually the character most threatened by the villain and has to be saved, at the climax, by the hero. This may be a girl which the boy has had a crush on for years, a childhood fantasy romance, which he worships the ground she walks on

The dispatcher sends the hero on her or his task, I don’t think that this would be used, since the characters goals are their own.

The false hero appears to be good but is revealed, this may be one of the friends that the boy finds when he becomes popular, this may be due to jealousy and so he uses this to backstab the main character.

Stuart Wallace- Audience Research

Defining the perfect audience- using UK Tribes

I believe that the perfect audience would be mainstream, due to a number of reasons. They tend to be in their teens, and exploring new experiences such as alcohol, women and many more. It is also the largest market segment, meaning that the film will be targeted at the mass market, which is why the film has to appeal to a wide range of people. This segment interacts the media through internet, TV as well as magazines, it is more likely that they are affected by opinion leader from their peers to reviews on TV or a magazine.
